Dean Dinner

Happy Monday! Back at home today is Columbus Day, but here in Spain no one has mentioned anything about the him, despite his Spanish heritage. Here in Córdoba it was a a normal, Spain-style Monday. I started my day off with a run with Amber, and I felt really powerful. I've been researching half marathons around Europe in November after most of my traveling is done, but there are not a lot of choices outside of a few in Germany, which don't really interest me. I'm considering mapping out a 13.1 mile course here in Córdoba and finding a few friends to run it with me on a specific date, and having t-shirts made that say the date and "Córdoba Mediomaraton." It sounds like a ton of fun, and with any luck I could persuade a few people to "just do it."

I only had one class today, my Comparative Political Institutions class, and it was one giant lecture. I'm hoping that the next time I open my notebook I can read my class notes; I was writing so fast to make sure I got everything the professor said and so I can look up the words I didn't know. It might be a giant squiggle.

After class and lunch, I had two great Skype dates with my mom and one of my best friends, Emma. It was great to catch up with both of them, particularly Emma, since I hadn't had an extended conversation with her since right before I left the US. She doesn't have the flexibility in her school schedule to come visit, but I plan on seeing her promptly when I cross the pond.

Later this afternoon I took a trip to the grocery store to buy some snacks to have in my room, and also had Sevillanas class. We started a second dance, and the learning is going faster, though it is by no means easy. It has a lot of the same steps as the first dance, which is great, but in different orders and slightly altered patterns, which makes it confusing. I'm sure it'll get easier with time, just like the first did.

After dinner, all the Smithie Preshquitas were invited to go to a formal dinner at El Choto with Smith's Dean of International Study, Rebecca Hovey, who is visiting our program in Córdoba and the other Smith-approved Abroad programs in Europe. Dinner for the vegetarians in the group was a simple plate of roasted veggies, and they tasted amazing. It is so un-Spanish to have straight-forward food, so it was a nice treat. We also got to give Dean Hovey some feedback on the program and chat with her about how our lives in Spain are going. Even though she isn't someone I ever see on campus, it was a treat to get to talk with another adult (outside of Esteban) who knows and appreciates Smith and the Northampton area.

Alright, its past midnight now, and in typical Spanish fashion, I just got home from dinner. It is most certainly time for bed; Amber and I have an 8-mile run date tomorrow morning! Buenas noches
