Mercado --> Madrid

Despite the lack of classes today, Friday has been relatively busy. This morning I met up with Sarah and went to explore a market up in Ciudad Jardin, a northern part of Cordoba. Sarah’s compañera de conversación, María, came with us and gave us a little tutorial about bargaining in Spain at markets. I love open-air markets with a huge variety of vendors, so this was right up my alley. The vans and tents literally took up an entire park area. I’d guess it’s about the size of a football field, or maybe a little more, and every square inch is packed. Its definitely not a tourist place either, which I liked. I’m to the point in my stay here in Spain where I’m discovering lots of things that “locals” do that are a bit off the beaten tourist path. The market is a perfect example of this, and a big thanks to María for taking us!

Sarah, being a vegan, was really excited about the bulk olives. I have such respect for how she is surviving here. I know how hard it is to be vegetarian, but I could have never survived here as a vegan. The fact that she has put the effort into maintaining a vegan diet in a country that prides itself on ham and eggs is spectacular. Anyways, she was so excited about her garlic olives that I had to take her picture:

Sarah and María stayed at the market for a bit longer, but I had to head back to Calle Postrera and do a quick turn-around to catch my train to Madrid. My train was for Córdoba Central to Mardid Atocha, the central train station here in Spain’s capital city. From the Atocha I caught the Metro over to Ben’s piso near Plaza de Manuel Becerra. Chase, another camp guy who goes to Williams but is studying abroad in Madrid for the semester, joined us for a caña (a small beer and tapa) at a local bar, and then the three of us went to Ben’s piso. Ben’s roommate made dinner and invited a few of her friends over, so by the time Tripp (another camp guy in Madrid) arrived, we had a small party going on. Not only was the food cheap—around 2.50 Euro per person, but we also had a great time hanging out and drinking wine.

Chase was headed out to a nearby club after dinner to meet up with a few more Kawanhee guys, so I walked over and said hello to them before coming back here to Ben’s couch for a brief nap.

MY MOMMY ARRIVES IN 4 HOURS. I really need to sleep so I can get up and go to the airport tomorrow morning, but I can’t. I’m too excited! She’s finally here! Can it be morning already? Now? Ahora?
